How to Use Mouth Tape with Your Skincare Routine
So many beauty influencers on TikTok have raved about the beauty benefits of mouth taping, following their skincare routines, but where does it fit in to everything else we do to take care of our health?
Your breath and respiratory health play a major role in your overall health, appearance, and wellness.
So it follows that making sure your breathing is as optimal as it can be—hello, it’s something we do nonstop, round the clock—is critical yet often overlooked. Mouth tape is a simple solution to gently seal your lips together so that you only breathe through your nose, not your mouth.
Understandably, you might be concerned about the impact of leaving a fabric or adhesive on your skin for hours at a time—or you might worry that any mouth tape will simply fall off due to the slick nature of some skincare serums, lotions, or oils.
Zips in particular are designed for skin specifically—with a breathable material that is 95% cotton, 5% spandex (for stretch, so it can adjust and conform to your lips after you put it on, for better hold). Our adhesive is specifically formulated for skin, so it won’t cause irritation. That said, you can always test a piece on another part of your body first, if you’re not sure how your delicate lip skin may react.
One common misconception about mouth tape is that you need to seal off the entire mouth—which could definitely freak someone out.
Luckily, it’s not true—mouth tape doesn’t have to cover your whole mouth to be effective.
Actually, we argue that it shouldn’t! Some people who build the habit start off with a big piece that covers everything but usually shift down to a smaller piece over time, as they get better at nose breathing. (Yes, you can get better at nose breathing over time!)
What we love most about the Zips shape is that it’s petite ✨, unobtrusive and subtle 🧖🏼♀️, and strengthens my jawline 😗—no need for all that extra material (wasteful) or extra adhesive (potentially irritating) on your skin. It doesn’t need to take over your face in order do its most important job—to keep your lips sealed together so you ONLY breathe through your nose.
Cute mouth tape it makes it easier to get into the sleep (and BEAUTY! 💋) habit without scaring your husband/roommate/partner half to death or looking like a hostage. 🤡
So how do you wear it if you have a multi-step skincare routine like us? 💅🏼
The rule of thumb for product absorption is about 30 minutes max—some products absorb much faster.
Do your skincare (and any lip care) at least half an hour before getting in bed… brush your teeth, start to wind down—then pop on your Zip once you get in bed.
Wearing your Zip for a little while before you actually try to sleep will get you used to the sensation (so you don’t take it off unconsciously in your sleep). You probably will take it off without knowing it the first few nights—but don’t worry. Stick with it and see how your sleep, breathing, and jawline transform.
